Galapagos ICE Staff

EMILY K. POZO, President and Founder

Emily K. Pozo

Before her work in the Galapagos, Emily served in international education for many years, most recently for BCA, a non-profit specializing in study abroad programs. She has taught Spanish at Illinois State University, lived in Mexico City, studied at la Universidad Compultense in Madrid, and served as a Temporary United States Consular Agent for the Galapagos. On her first visit to the Islands, she was dazzled by their beauty and magnificence, but was also disturbed by the troubling conditions for residents of the Islands. After speaking with local fishermen, shopkeepers, municipal workers, water taxi drivers, and food service employees, she became more aware of the acute economic challenges they face, and their inadequate access to healthcare and education for their families. Emily began organizing programs to address these problems in 2005, and officially founded Galapagos ICE (Immerse Connect Evolve) in 2006. It is her belief that a Galapagos population that has greater access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities can serve as a strong bulwark against ecological deterioration. Emily currently lives in Puerto Ayora, Isla Santa Cruz, Galapagos.

ERIC CALDWELL, Executive Director

Eric Caldwell has been active in the development of Galapagos ICE since 2005, traveling to the Islands to help Founder Emily Pozo’s early initiatives and helping to incorporate the organization and strategize for growth. Prior to becoming Executive Director in 2008, he completed a Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia, where he taught classical and Renaissance literature. Currently a part-time assistant professor of English at Sweet Briar College (VA), Eric is also an avid hiker and world traveler who is passionate about empowering Galapagos residents to take possession of their ecological heritage. Eric endeavors to spend at least two months out of the year working alongside Galapagos ICE volunteers.
