Vision
We envision a Galapagos community in which all individuals have access to adequate education and health care, and one that is viewed by all as a valued partner in efforts to protect the fragile ecology of the Islands.
Mission
To this end, Galapagos ICE strives to improve the educational and medical systems in the Galapagos Islands, and to encourage ecological efforts that recognize the local population as integral participants in the conservation of this unique natural habitat.
Objectives and Goals
Educational Objective: To ensure that all students in the Galapagos school system receive a high-quality education, and attend school in buildings that are both physically safe and conducive to learning.
Goals:
- to provide educational programming not available in Galapagos schools through volunteer teaching;
- to repair, rebuild, and otherwise upgrade school buildings and school properties;
- to distribute educational supplies, equipment, and furnishings to needy schools;
- to improve the knowledge and skills of local teachers by organizing pedagogical workshops and seminars;
- to support the Directorate of Education in the development of policies that bring the school system into greater accord with international pedagogical standards; and
- to provide educational programs and workshops on a variety of topics to the general public.
Medical Objective: To ensure that all individuals in the Galapagos Islands have adequate access to competent, informed, and sufficiently-supplied medical care.
Goals:
- to assist Galapagos hospitals and local clinics by providing them with volunteer health workers (such as doctors, nurses, dentists, nutritionists, etc.);
- to disseminate medical supplies and equipment that are necessary for the medical community to do its work;
- to improve the knowledge and skills of Galapagos health care workers by providing free medical workshops and seminars on pressing issues (like HIV/AIDS);
- to support the Directorate of Health in the development of policies that bring the health care system into greater accord with international standards; and
- to host public health seminars on pressing topics (such as general nutrition, sexually-transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, etc.).
Ecological Objective: To protect and preserve the Galapagos ecosystem through efforts that enfranchise and utilize Galapagos residents.
Goals:
- To ensure that Galapagos residents receive the education and training necessary to take an active role in conservation efforts;
- to support the Galapagos National Park, the Charles Darwin Station, and other Ecuadorian and Galapagos nonprofit groups in the development of new policies and projects that enfranchise the local population; to educate schoolchildren about Galapagos ecology and steps to safeguard it; and
- to encourage international institutions to view the local population as a potential resource, and to help plan projects that utilize and develop that resource.
