Afterschool Recreational Activities

Sports

Although the islands are surrounded by beaches, there are a limited number of healthy, organized activities in which teenagers can become involved. The lack of positive and structured physical outlets can lead to boredom, obesity, and reckless behavior. Organized athletics are a good way to distract oneself, good way to prevent illnesses and keep a healthy mind. To improve the situation, Galapagos ICE is working with the Municipal Government’s after school sports program, which includes indoor and outdoor soccer, frisbee, basketball, track and field, Ping-Pong (an incredibly popular sport on the islands), tennis, Chess and Tae Kwan Do.  Galapagos ICE is looking for volunteers to work as assistants coaches during the after school programs.

Fine Arts

In 2011-2012 Galapagos ICE hopes to support a Fine Art after school program with the Municipal Government which would include: painting, art with recycled material, music, dance, and theater. More information is forthcoming.

Computer Training

Knowing how to use a computer is an essential skill in today’s global society. Even though many people in the Galapagos do use computers, there is still a lack of knowledge of basic and advanced skills. Galapagos ICE continuously looks for volunteers to work with institutions and community members by giving workshops/classes on computer skills.
