    Libraries

Most families in the Galapagos Islands do not have books in the home. The books in bookshops are limited in supply and tend to be expensive and many families simply cannot afford this basic investment in their children’s education.

Galapagos ICE aims to improve education by providing better access to books in libraries in schools and in the local community.

Having access to a both fiction and non-fiction books and reference texts helps students to develop their research skills, personal interests and areas of expertise beyond those taught in the classroom as part of the core school curriculum.

We also want to provide positive role models for children to read for pleasure and for personal growth.

    Books Below the Equator

We are working with a generous group of teachers, students and Toyota International Teacher Program Alumni to create a high-quality school library at Delia Ibarra Elementary School on Isla Santa Cruz in the Galapagos. Find out more about the Books Below the Equator Project, and the kinds of fund raising events these volunteers are organizing, such as the Booking it for Books 5K Run.
