Education Volunteers Needed

We work closely with the local schools to support the teachers and to provide afterschools programs for the students.

We are seeking:

  • (English as a Foreign Language) EFL Certified Teachers
  • Teachers with expertise in pedagogical training
  • Teachers with expertise in curriculum development
  • People with skills in Art, Dance, Theatre
  • People with experience in Environmental Education
  • Librarians and people with experience working in libraries
  • People with Computer Maintenance skills
  • People with ability to teach sports such as indoor and outdoor soccer, basketball, track and field, Ping-Pong, tennis, chess, Tae Kwan Do and more!

Service periods are generally 2 weeks or longer (up to 3 months), while 3 months is preferred for positions where there is interaction with the students in order to provide continuity. Basic Spanish is required for all placements and EFL certification is required for all teachers who will be teaching English.

Coaches or Assistants
Description: Looking for interns to assist with after school sports program or summer camps working with students from 5-18 years old. (Galapagos summer runs from late January through late March).
Location: Santa Cruz island
Institution: Galapagos ICE and the Municipal Government in Santa Cruz
Volunteer dates: Open ended
Minimum length: 3 months
Maximum length: 3 months
required Skills: Coaching experience in any capacity in: Tae Kwan Do, Ping Pong, indoor or outdoor soccer, tennis, Chess, basketball or track and field.
Age: Adults (20-64) and Seniors (65 and over)
Spanish Language Level: Basic to advanced Spanish

ESL Teachers
Description: Galapagos ICE interns teach local community members English.  On some occasions interns may be asked to teach English at local businesses or teach ESL to children ranging from 6-18 years old.
Location: Santa Cruz island
Institution: After-school Galapagos ICE ESL project, sometimes interns may be asked to teach ESL at a local school
Volunteer dates: March 30-January 15 (typical school year)
Minimum length: 3 months
Maximum length: 3 months
required Skills: ESL Certificate with some teaching experience
Age: Adults (18-64) and Seniors (65 and over)
Spanish Language Level: Strong English, basic Spanish

 

ESL Curriculum Development
Description: Looking for interns to work with Galapagos ICE and their ESL Program to improve the current ESL Program in the schools.  We are looking for ESL teachers with experience in curriculum development and pedagogical training.  We are currently in the evaluation stage of the project and will need to work with the ESL teachers to improve their skills.
Location: Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz island
Institution: Work with Galapagos ICE, Supervision of Education and local ESL Teachers
Volunteer dates: End of April until first week of December
Minimum length: 1 month
Maximum length: 3 months

Age: Adults (21-64) and Seniors (65 and over)
Spanish Language Level: Strong English, basic Spanish

 

Environmental Development
Description: Individuals able to spend at least three months in the Galapagos are asked to teach Environmental Education to local educational institutions.  Those who cannot spend that amount of time in the Galapagos are asked to work with Galapagos ICE on creating Environmental Education activities to be distributed to local educational institutions.  We are also starting a Green School project and are interested in interns to work on initiating and working with the project.

Fine Arts
Description: In 2011 the Municipal Government will open an after school fine arts program and is looking for fine arts interns to work with children and teenagers in music, art and dance.

Physical Education
Description: Looking for interns to work in the after school Municipal Government sports program working with children from 5-18 years old.

Informational Technology
Description: Looking for interns to help in local educational institutions by fixing computer problems, which may include computer viruses to changing a main board.  We are also looking for interns to teach computers to locals in the afternoon in Santa Cruz Island.

Institution: Local educational institutions and Supervision of Education

Libraries
Description: Looking for interns to help in local schools by setting up libraries.  Galapagos ICE received more than 14,000 books that have been distributed to local educational institutions.  The books still need to be categorized and a library system needs to be set up.  We are also interested in interns who are able to help create activities for students in the libraries.  Currently the majority of the schools are without fully functioning libraries.
