Health Volunteers Needed

We work closely with the local hospital, clinics, the Red Cross of Santa Cruz, and the Santa Cruz Health Council to help them secure the much needed services of volunteer health and medical professionals.

Some specific needs include:

  • Doctors specializing in trauma, diabetes and geriatric medicine
  • Nurses
  • Radiologists
  • Cardiologists
  • Epidemiologists
  • Dietitians
  • Medical Students
  • Physical Therapists
  • Social Workers
  • Psychologists
  • Other specialists

We are also seeking volunteers to give workshops on a variety of health and medical topics such as AIDS Education, Sexual Education, Nutrition, First Aid, and Medical English, as well as seminars for local medical professionals about new medical research, technology and protocols.

Service periods are generally 2 weeks or longer (up to 3 months) and basic Spanish is required for all placements.

Public Health Workers
Description: Looking for interns to help with local institutions addressing public health issues including hygiene, HIV/AIDS, community health, etc.
Location: Santa Cruz island, Isabela island, Floreana island
Institution: Galapagos ICE and local medical institutions
Volunteer dates: Open ended
Minimum length: 5 days
Maximum length: 3 months
required Skills: Educational background in Public Health or experience working with Public Health issues
Age: Adults (20-64) and Seniors (65 and over)
Spanish Language Level: Basic to advanced Spanish
Medical Professionals and Students
Description: Looking for interns to help in local medical institutions to either give health check-ups in local communities or offer their services to local medical institutions.
Location: Santa Cruz island, Isabela island, Floreana island
Institution: Galapagos ICE and local medical institutions
Volunteer dates: Open ended
Minimum length: 5 days
Maximum length: 3 months
required Skills: Experience as a General Practitioner, Dentist, Nurse, Specialty doctor, ER doctor, Endocrinologist, Cardiologist, or Dermatologist
Age: Adults (20-64) and Seniors (65 and over)
Spanish Language Level: Basic to advanced Spanish (if coming to give health check-ups we can occasionally supply a translator)

 

Therapists, Psychologists and Sociologists
Description: Looking for interns to help in local medical institutions working with residents with various health issues.  High schools are looking for interns who are sociologists/psychologists and interns who can work with the schools’ Social Worker to teach Sexual Education, Self-Esteem, etc., and work with students in need.  We are also looking for interns to work with our Mental Health Project by working with drug and alcohol addicts and domestic abusers.  There is a high index of interfamily violence in Santa Cruz Island, and Galapagos ICE is the only institution striving to break the domestic violence cycle by working with the batterers.
