Overview

Galapagos ICE (Immerse – Connect – Evolve) has welcomed volunteers from all over the globe, and their work has been as varied as the individuals themselves. Doctors, nurses, dentists, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals have worked in local hospitals and clinics. Visiting teachers have led classes at local elementary and high schools, and conducted pedagogical seminars for Galapagos teachers. We have found placements for eco-architects and yoga teachers, muralists and university professors. We have facilitated collaborations between world-class artists and Galapagos students on elaborate art projects, and we have sponsored a host of public lectures on matters of cultural and scientific significance.
We welcome any volunteer or group whose proposal is compatible with our organization’s mission statement and goals, and we take a very personalized approach to learning about our volunteers’ skills, talents and interests, to connect them with the local communities and individuals who need their service most. We are eminently grateful for our volunteers’ generosity, ingenuity and dedication, and we strive to make their experiences in the Galapagos as enjoyable and enriching as possible.
Galapagos ICE differs greatly from other organizations that arrange volunteer placements in the Islands. First, we are a certified US 501(c)(3) international charity that is subject to stringent financial controls and dedicated to keep volunteer fees as low as possible. Second, our primary office is located on site in the Galapagos–not on the Ecuadorian mainland, or anywhere else around the world. Emily Pozo, the President and Founder, lives year-round in the Islands, and provides the direct point of contact for all individuals working within Galapagos ICE’s volunteer program. Intimately knowledgeable about the Islands, Galapagos National Park rules, local customs, and possessing quick access to all levels of Galapagueñian bureaucracy, Ms. Pozo is uniquely situated to provide unprecedented levels of volunteer support.
All volunteers receive an on-site orientation that includes a briefing not only on the humanitarian situation in the Islands, but also an introduction to local flora and fauna, local customs and culture. Emily Pozo holds regular office hours during which time volunteers may meet and brainstorm solutions to problems, or just check in and talk. She also holds bi-monthly volunteer meetings in which all volunteers gather in the office, present on the status of their projects, and listen to presentations by their fellow volunteers.
