Galapagos ICE is particularly interested in setting up Special Projects volunteer opportunities for qualified educators and medical/health professionals. Below are some general descriptions and guidelines for these placements.
Education Volunteers
The Galapagos school year runs from April until January. However, we can find placements for ESL volunteers to teach all-age classes during the schools’ summer break.
Short Term Educational Volunteers (2-4 weeks): Educational Volunteers staying in the Galapagos for less than 1 month are asked to give workshops or capacitating seminars for Galapagos instructors on the topic of your choice. (In an effort to provide a stable learning environment for students, the Directorate of Education does not support placement of visiting teachers in classrooms for time periods of less than 3 months.) All presentations must be prepared prior to arriving, unless otherwise indicated. Examples of workshops include: Classroom Management, Curriculum Design, Conflict Resolution and Discipline, Strategic Planning, Classroom Activities, and Arts Activities (Art, Music, Dance, Drama).
Long Term Educational Volunteers (up to 3 months): Galapagos ICE can find a teaching placement for you in a local school. Examples of these opportunities include: English as a Second Language, Elementary School level, High School level (various subjects), Special Education, and Arts Education (Art, Music, Dance, Drama).
ESL (English as a Second Language) Volunteers: Galapagos ICE is looking for ESL Volunteers to teach English to a variety of groups in the Islands, including local schools, government officials and law enforcement, and medical professionals involved with the local hospital, clinics, and the Red Cross. Volunteers are also wanted for pedagogical workshops for Galapagos English instructors.
Medicine/Health Volunteers
Galapagos ICE works closely with the local hospital, clinics, the Red Cross of Santa Cruz, and the Santa Cruz Health Council to help them secure the much needed services of volunteer health and medical professionals. Service periods are generally 2 weeks or longer (up to 3 months) and basic Spanish is required for all placements.
Some examples of the professionals we are seeking:
• Doctors specializing in trauma, diabetes and geriatric medicine
• Nurses
• Laparoscopic Surgeons
• Anesthesiologists
• Radiologists
• Cardiologists

Health and Medical Workshops: Galapagos ICE is also looking for volunteers to give workshops on a variety of health and medical topics such as AIDS Education, Sexual Education, Nutrition, First Aid, and Medical English, as well as seminars for local medical professionals about new medical research, technology and protocols.
